The Mission of the Sullivan County BOCES Health and Safety Office is to work with our BOCES
and Component Districts to ensure that the staff, students, and visitors have a safe work environment through regulatory compliance, training, and technical services.
 
 
The program provides environmental, health, and safety consultations, technical services, and training to our component districts and our own employees. Consultations include assisting in PESH, EPA, DEC, or other external agency inspections, Building/Fire Code issues, accident/illness reporting and workers compensation (select Districts only), support to local safety committees, and more. Technical Services include conducting annual Fire Safety Inspections, Annual Visual Inspections (AVIs), Asbestos Inspections and review of Asbestos Management Plans. Other services include environmental testing including: 
 
  • Indoor Air Quality for Mold, temperature, humidity, and carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide
  • Air and surface sampling for asbestos, lead, and radon
  • Water testing (Bacterial, Chemical, Metals, etc)
  • Soil testing (pesticides, lead, radon)

The department also provides fingerprinting services in accordance with Education Law §§305(30), 3004-b, 3004-c and 3035, as amended by Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and Part 87 of the Commissioner's Regulations. Using the latest technology, they manage, submit, and record all fingerprinted employees and assist districts with ensuring their employees are properly processed. The department also offers the production of identification badges.

The Health & Safety / Risk Management Department also provides training on a number of safety related topics including. Asbestos in schools (AHERA), Bloodborne Pathogen and Right to Know (Initial and Refresher), Bomb Threat/Suspicious Package, Front Desk/Greeter Training, Lab Safety, Ladder Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Safe Lifting/Back Injury Prevention, Workplace Violence Prevention and more.
